I made the drive to Sea Side Beach on a bright sunny day expecting to get some good beach and boardwalk shots. Instead when I arrived the area was overcast, with a thick fog rolling in from the ocean. Although the scenery was not what I wanted, it did create for some really interesting shots and made it a challenge to work in. I probably would not have come across this shell on the beach if it was not for those conditions.
What I like about this picture is how it looks like the beach comes to a sudden drop off just a few feet ahead. The fog prevented anything too far away from showing up in the picture. I was maybe only 10 feet away from the water, but you could never tell from this shot.
Arcade - Seaside, New Jersey
Here is another photo from my walk through Seaside. I saw Lucky Leo’s Arcade, a favorite of mine as a kid, and knew that it would translate well to black and white because of the contrast between the white and dark paint. I threw on my wide angle lens because I did not have a lot of space to get the picture unless I wanted telephone poles and parked cars to ruin the shot. Using the wide angle lens also increases the feeling of actually being there by creating more perspective in the picture.
Seaside Boardwalk Kid - New Jersey
This is another photo I took at Seaside. As previously mentioned, it was a very foggy day at the board walk, but I was lucky enough for a few moments of sun to capture this image where the kid was framed right in the light. Unfortunately I was further away than I would have like to of been and had to crop the image to get the composition I wanted. I also only had moments to get the image so I did not have enough time to adjust my settings and get less detail on the background to put emphasis on the kid.
Seaside Boardwalk - New Jersey
I took this photo on Sunday, which was a beautiful day and I thought it would be great to shoot at the beach on such a nice day. All the way down the parkway the weather was great until I approached the bridge to crossover into Seaside, there was just this incredibly dense fog covering the entire town. I have never shot in fog before, so it created a very interesting shooting situation. The lighting and the fog created a lot of very high key images which I haven’t work with before.
